“Christian, seek
not yet repose” is a popular Christian hymn. It calls Christians to neither relax nor
be lax in their faith. The reason is that the enemy is neither relaxed nor lax
in their onslaught against the faith.
Recent events in Nigeria show the Church is under
siege. It is easy to identify Boko Haram attack as that siege. But that is not
our concern here. If the devil were to walk down our streets with two horns on
the head wearing a black cloth, having devouring teeth and clawed hands and ask
for followers, I guess
none would follow. Boko Haram never hid their identity,
and so no one who does not identify with their nefarious activities follows
them.
But what happens if the devil comes well dressed in
suit and tie, having respectable language and concern for our welfare? What if
he dangles a carrot that we probably have not eaten before? What if he
analytically proves that we have all along been cheated and has come to deliver
us? Would we not gladly welcome him?
Can anyone who sings the hymn above give any
justifiable reason our respected fathers in the Lord have allowed themselves to
be dragged into the murky waters of Nigerian politics? Can any say why the
Church is weakening its structure by split along political lines for a mess of
pottage? For the foundation, certainly, cannot be weakened. It standeth sure,
with the seal of God (2 Tim. 2: 19). Is there any reason acceptable to God for anyone
who sings that hymn to attack the leadership of CAN which Nigerian Christians
have accepted as their umbrella body? Can we still not see how
“principalities
and powers
Mustering their
unseen arrays
Wait for thy
unguarded hour…”
It seems the Church is presently unguarded in her hierarchy,
though “saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, ‘How long?’
We earnestly beseech all who identify with the cause
of Christ to remember the pains the Lord went through for the Church. It amounts
to crucifying the Lord over again to betray His cause for any temporal gain or
because we feel disobeyed. Our voice, as any other, may be a voice of reason,
but certainly does not take the place of God’s voice in another’s life. We owe
a duty to Christ who purchased us with His precious, sinless blood, and to
ourselves to encourage one another and pray for ourselves and for our nation as
we navigate through this tortuous moment in our nation’s history. O, child of
God, let your eyes be open.
Christian,
seek not yet repose
Hear
thy guardian angel say
Thou
art in the midst of foes
Watch
and pray.
