The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rep. Emeka
Ihedioha, has urged members of the professions and business class to
engage legislators in the National Assembly, by making informed inputs
into the legislative process.
He gave the advice on Wednesday in Abuja, when a delegation of the South-East/South-South Professionals (SESSPN), paid him a courtesy visit.
Ihedioha said that such cooperation became necessary for the overall interest of the country.
“We urge you to utilise mechanisms of the House and engage with the parliament which is an open House and a House of the people at all times,” Ihedioha said.
He also enjoined the professionals not to engage in uninformed criticisms of the legislature.
Ihedioha said that as members of the professions and business, they had access to members of the National Assembly with whom they could engage and “make informed inputs into the policy process in the legislature.”
According to him, the House of Representatives has put in place mechanisms for engaging with members of the public.
He said that the mechanism included public hearings and the standing committee of the house on public petitions adding that the House was always ready to interface with the people of Nigeria.
He cited the constitution amendment which took members of the constitution committee of the House to the entire grassroots, to allow all Nigerians to participate in the amendment process.
Ihedioha noted that the House also adopted zonal public hearings on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), given the critical nature of the proposed legislation.
He said the PIB had reached “technical stage” adding that the House was desirous to see to its early passage.
Speaking earlier, the President of the group, Mr Emeka Ugwu-Oju, informed the deputy speaker that the delegation was in the House to confer with lawmakers on how to improve the economic ties of the two zones.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other members of the House from the two regions also attended the meeting.
SESSPN is a non- partisan group, aimed at promoting the socio-economic well-being of the people of the two regions.(NAN)
