Hours before a momentous announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday December 6, 2017 the move was “long
overdue.”
“Many presidents have said they want to do something and they didn’t do
it. Whether it’s courage or they changed their mind, I can’t tell you,” Trump
said, portraying himself as daring to fulfill a promise that previous
presidents have shied away from.
“I think it’s long overdue,” he said.
Trump is expected to upend decades of US policy later Wednesday by
stating that the holy city — part of which is claimed by Palestinians — rightfully
belongs to Israel.
President Donald Trump has announced the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The announcement has been preceded by warnings of a violent response in
the Muslim world and demonstrators in the Gaza Strip burning American flags.
“This is nothing more or less than the recognition of
reality,” Trump said in a speech announcing the United States’ view
about the contentious move on Wednesday.
He reiterated that the United States was still committed to the Middle East peace process and that it would support the two-state solution.
He expressed confidence that disagreements over Jerusalem would be resolved.
He said Vice President Pence would travel to Jerusalem in days coming, and that the United States Embassy would be relocated from Tel-Aviv toJerusalem.
